US coalition kills 50 in Syrian airstrike

US-LED coalition bombs killed at least 50 civilians in the Syrian province of Deir Ezzor yesterday with dozens of children included among the victims, local sources reported.

Air strikes targeted the al-Baghouz camp were the last remaining Isis jihadist groups have been holed up along with an unknown number of civilians.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (Sana) warned that the death toll was likely to be higher, with many people injured in the bombing raid which targeted dozens of families trying to escape the area.

Last Thursday US warplanes were again accused of using the banned substance white phosphorus in air strikes, which killed a number of people close to the Syrian-Iraqi border.

The US-led coalition was formed in 2014 and sits outside the jurisdiction of the United Nations security council.

Syria has long complained about its presence in the country, accusing the US of acting as an occupying force. Damascus has written to the UN demanding it take action to end indiscriminate killings and set up an independent international mechanism to investigate possible war crimes.
