We need more jails for all the political prisoners, says Thai government

THAILAND needs to build more prisons to deal with the surge in political arrests, its government says.

Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin said on Wednesday that the Bangkok Remand Prison and Klong Prem Central Prison, where most recently detained political prisoners are held, are becoming too congested, and that extra prison space would suit “everyone’s convenience.”

Thai authorities have cracked down hard in recent months on a protest movement that targets the power of the monarchy and its role in successive military coups, including one which elevated current Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha to power in 2014.

The legal aid group Thai Lawyers for Human Rights recently said at least 382 people, including 13 minors, are facing charges related to political demonstrations and expressing political views from July 2020 onwards.

Notoriously courts sentenced a 63-year-old woman to an unprecedented 43 years behind bars in January for insulting the monarchy by sharing critical posts on social media.
