West Papua independence leaders jailed by an Indonesian court

THREE West Papuan independence leaders were jailed for treason by an Indonesian court today in a move seen as an attempt by the occupying forces to crush the liberation movement .

Buchtar Tabuni, a leader of the United Liberation Movement for West Papua, jailed for 11 months, and Irwanus Uropmabin and Ferry Gombo, university students in Jayapura, for ten months.

The charges stem from their role in protests last year, known as the West Papuan uprising, triggered by continuing oppression in West Papua and racist incidents against Papuans elsewhere in Indonesia.
