MEXICO: Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn spoke on Monday at the daily press conference given by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (Amlo).

Mr Corbyn, whose Mexican wife Laura is a vocal supporter and friend of Amlo, praised the Mexican government’s efforts to ensure development in the country's poorest places.

“There is nothing more wasteful in the world than consigning children to a life of poverty where they don’t achieve their potential, and the whole society loses out,” he said.

“We’re all damaged by inequality.”

SWEDEN: A 49-year-old woman has been charged with war crimes and breaching international law for allegedly helping her son to go to fight in Syria as a child soldier.

The woman is suspected of helping to recruit one of her sons, born in 2001, while they were living in Syrian territory once controlled by jihadist group Islamic State between 2013 and 2016.

The Swedish Prosecution Authority said that it was the first time that the country had brought war crimes charges against an individual for abetting the recruitment of child soldiers.

BRAZIL: Far-right President Jair Bolsonaro was taken to a Sao Paulo hospital for tests early Monday after experiencing abdominal discomfort.

Vila Nova Star hospital said that the president had an intestinal obstruction and was in stable condition. It later said that Mr Bolsonaro’s condition had improved, though there was still no definitive evaluation of whether he will require surgery.

Mr Bolsonaro, 66, has suffered a series of medical problems and undergone several operations since he was stabbed in the abdomen on the campaign trail in 2018.

CHINA: A senior arms control official denied yesterday that his government was rapidly expanding its nuclear arsenal, though he said it was taking steps to modernise its nuclear forces.

Fu Cong, director-general of the Foreign Ministry's arms control department, said that China was working to ensure its nuclear deterrent met the minimum level necessary for national defence.

“On the assertions made by US officials that China is expanding dramatically its nuclear capabilities, first let me say that this is untrue,” he said at a briefing in Beijing.
