MYANMAR: At least 30 miners are missing following a landslide at a jade mine in Kpakant, Kachin state.

The area is home to the world’s most profitable jade mines. A local rescue team leader said that over 30 miners were swept into a lake when the landslide struck. Debris from other mines is believed to have contributed to the landslide.

ETHIOPIA: The parliament was due to vote last night to confirm a state of emergency allowing arrests and searches without a warrant as well as curfews in the Amhara region.

Last week, the military announced victory over the regional Fano militia, which turned against it after fighting alongside government troops in the Tigray war. Witnesses in Amhara say a new crackdown has seen hundreds of locals arrested.

UNITED STATES: Mark Zuckerberg says it is time to “move on” from speculation that he will take on Elon Musk in a cage fight, saying his rival is not serious about the mooted contest.

The social media billionaire rivals agreed to a cage fight in June, but Facebook founder Mr Zuckerberg says Twitter (now “X”) owner Mr Musk has not responded to proposed dates. Mr Musk continues to hype the idea.

NORWAY: A railway bridge over the River Laagen collapsed yesterday, following weeks of torrential rain.

Authorities had closed the bridge a week earlier due to fears that the hugely increased water volume would put its supports under too much strain, but the incident underlines the impact of extreme weather events on essential infrastructure.
