HAITI: Prime Minister Ariel Henry on Monday formally appointed a transition council charged with ensuring that long-awaited general elections are held.

He said that it was a significant step towards holding elections later this year which Haiti has failed to do since the July 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moise.

PALESTINE: The Palestinian Health Ministry said on Tuesday that Israeli troops killed a Palestinian teenager in an army raid in the occupied West Bank.

The ministry said that 17-year-old Hamza al-Ashqar died of a gunshot wound to the head but provided no additional details about the incident. There was no comment from the Israeli military.

NEW YORK CITY: Nearly 150 police officers committed misconduct, including using excessive force, while responding to the 2020 protests over the killing of George Floyd, according to a report released on Monday by a civilian review board.

The city’s Civilian Complaint Review Board also found that many officers disciplined by the police department received punishment that was less than the panel recommended, and in some cases officers found to have committed misconduct were not disciplined at all.

THAILAND: Concerns about the condition of two hunger strikers seeking political and judicial reforms in Thailand heightened on Monday after the hospital where the two women are being kept urgently summoned their parents.

Tantawan “Tawan” Tuatulanon and Orawan “Bam” Phuphong have been on hunger strike since January 18 to back their demands for reform of the justice system, the release of political prisoners pending trial and for lawmakers to amend or abolish laws used against political dissidents.
