WORKERS at Tata Steel’s Port Talbot facility are set to ballot for strike action over projected job losses linked to decarbonisation.
Announcing the decision, steelworkers’ union Community said the ballot would start in two weeks.
Community’s national officer Alun Davies said: “It has become evident over recent days that Tata Steel is not serious about engaging with our multi-union plan for steel.
“We’ve put forward a credible and workable alternative to Tata Steel, but it’s through their lack of action, and their unwillingness to steer away from their damaging plan that we’ve come to this point.
“We will fight for our members, their jobs and their communities.”
A Tata Steel spokesman said: “It is inaccurate to suggest that we have not engaged with the multi-union plan.
“We have had regular discussions with the multi-union UK steel committee and worked hand in hand with their chosen industry consultants, Syndex, with an open-book approach.”
Community said it represented the majority of workers who will be affected by Tata’s decarbonisation plans.
