Round Up World in brief: 27/12/17

AFGHANISTAN: At least six people were killed and 13 wounded yesterday when a suicide bomber on a motorbike struck a football stadium in the eastern city of Jalalabad.

Nangarhar provincial governor’s spokesman Attahullah Khogyani said that the bombing had taken place shortly after a pro-government rally ended at the stadium.

Two intelligence service members were killed and 10 others wounded on Saturday in multiple Isis bomb attacks in Jalalabad.

FRANCE: Government spokesman Benjamin Grivaux revealed yesterday that Paris plans to set up an African military force to intervene in Libya against human traffickers.

Mr Grivaux said that “an intra-African force must be able to intervene,” after recent televised footage of a migrant slave auction in Libya provoked horror and condemnation worldwide.

He said that details will be discussed at a meeting between African and European leaders in Paris on December 13.

GERMANY: The Interior Ministry suggested yesterday that rejected asylum-seekers who return home voluntarily could receive a one-off payment of €3,000 (£2,650).

Those who qualify can apply by a February 28 deadline and would be given the money once they arrive home.

Migrants who agree to go back even before their asylum request is rejected have already been offered €1,200 per adult and €600 per child under a different programme for almost a year.

SYRIA: People’s Protection Units (YPG) fighters have cleared areas east of the River Euphrates river of Isis militants, a spokesman for the mainly Kurdish militia announced yesterday.

Noureddine Mahmoud praised US and Russian support for forces operating in eastern Deir Ezzor province, expressing hope of more co-ordination with the two powers to protect liberated areas.

US Defence Secretary James Mattis confirmed on Saturday that Washington would soon stop arming the YPG.
