SOMALI PIRATES: A Tanzanian-flagged tanker was hijacked by suspected Somali pirates off Yemen’s coast, security sources and local officials familiar with the incident said on Sunday.

The commercial tanker has since been moved to waters off Somalia’s north-east Bari region, according to local officials.

The MT Asana was seized on Friday after departing from Mukalla, Yemen, according to the sources. The vessel is now being held off the coast of Caluula in the semi-autonomous state of Puntland’s Bari region.

CHINA: Jingye Group, the former owners of British Steel, demanded compensation from the British government on Sunday for investment losses following the nationalisation of the manufacturer last week.

In a WeChat statement, the group said the nationalisation tarnished the credibility of the British government, spooked international investors and caused great losses to the company’s operation and British taxpayers’ funds.

FRANCE: France observed on Sunday its annual commemoration of the Vel d’Hiv mass arrest of Jews by French police in 1942, one of the most shameful acts undertaken by the country’s wartime government.

INDONESIA: Rescuers found five survivors on Saturday evening after a passenger boat sank earlier in the week in eastern Indonesian waters and were searching for 20 people still missing.

The KM Nurul Salsa, which was carrying 78 passengers and crew, experienced engine failure and sank Wednesday about 43 nautical miles from the port in the Selayar Islands, in South Sulawesi Province.

The five survivors were found late on Saturday clinging to a fish trap.
