COUNCIL staff working from home in Wales could face poverty as their employers refuse to help with soaring bills.
Ceredigion Council has rejected a call to increase workers’ allowance towards home running costs despite a looming rise in energy costs of at least 50 per cent, according to public-sector union Unison.
The cost of using broadband and telephones is also expected to increase by 10 per cent.
Workers based at home are entitled to deduct their costs from their income for tax purposes.
The government’s cap of £1,277 a year for average energy use is to rise to about £2,000.
Unison Ceredigion branch secretary Alison Boshier said: “We need to be compensated for this by our employer, especially as we are still in the middle of winter and, without help, many members will be facing a difficult choice of eating or heating.”
Ceredigion Council has told Unison that it will keep the situation under review.
The council was invited to comment.
