THE Communist Party of Swaziland (CPS) has condemned the “persecution of independent media” by King Mswati III through the South African courts.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the CPS warned that the Mswati regime’s use of the South African legal system to prosecute the website Swaziland News “has once again proved that in Swaziland there is no freedom of expression.”
It accused rulers of colluding with their “capitalist handlers” in a bid to shut down the independent news site, using foreign courts to “harass and persecute” its editor.
“It is an abomination that Mswati and his friends have elected to abuse the democratic space in South Africa while the people of Swaziland do not have such space to challenge the monarchy’s actions and decisions,” it said.
It accused the king of seeking to “crush the people of Swaziland while he remains untouched in his country, where he rules by an iron fist.”
The CPS called on all progressive forces to “wage a militant fight against the suppression of media freedom,” which it said was “bound up with the fight for the total freedom of the people of Swaziland,” officially known as Eswatini since 2018.
