Album Round-up: North Atlantic Oscillation’s The Third Day

ROCK is, of course, a broad church. It runs from sweaty and urgent rock ‘n’ roll, through badly played punk all the way to carefully crafted prog-rock.

Edinburgh Trio North Atlantic Oscillation consummately explore the latter, often derided, sub-genre.

As their name suggests, the band paint on a widescreen musical canvas and are not afraid to experiment.

The epic, perhaps overblown, Elsewhere sits somewhere between Radiohead and Elbow while Dust echoes The Beatles’ more psychedelic moments like Tomorrow Never Knows.

August is the most radio-friendly number here, with lead singer Sam Healy’s falsetto, robotic vocals sounding a lot like a Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots out-take.

If you like your rock music full of big ideas, with heavily produced and intricate sounds ready-made for arenas, then you’ll find much to enjoy here.
