PROTESTERS will gather across the world on Wednesday to stand against plans by the Indian authorities to mine tribal forests for coal.
Indigenous people in the Hasdeo Forest in Chhattisgarh have been resisting the destruction of their lands after authorities approved the large mine at Parsa.
The government has also given the green light for the expansion of the existing PEKB coal mine in the forest.
Both mines will be operated by mining giant Adani.
Across India, it is estimated that tens of thousands of Adivasi people’s lands and livelihoods are under threat from coal mining.
As India gears up to increase coal mining to one billion tonnes per year, 80 per cent of new planned mines are on Adivasi lands.
One Adivasi man said: “We are facing a critical situation now and so we are doing an indefinite protest.
“If our lands are taken away, our future generations will lose their identity and our existence will be lost forever.”
Protests will take place in London, Washington, Milan, Berlin, Mexico City and other locations from 9am local times onwards on Wednesday.
