Orban says Ukraine cannot start talks on EU accession
Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban arrives for a round table meeting at an EU summit in Brussels, on October 26, 2023

HUNGARIAN Prime Minister Viktor Orban said today that “negotiations must not begin” on Ukraine joining the European Union, potentially derailing Brussels’s bid to start them.

The European Commission said on Wednesday that Ukraine could begin formal accession talks in December if it meets some conditions. But unanimity is required for new EU members and Hungary and more recently Slovakia are standing in the way.

The commission said Ukraine had shown remarkable “institutional strength” since the Russian invasion began in February 2022, though President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government has jailed opposition leaders and muzzled critical media.
