Trade union outrage as nationalists attack strikes
School support workers, who are members of Unison, on the picket line at Royal Mile Primary School in Edinburgh, September 26, 2023

UNISON hit back today at “attempts to undermine our union’s democracy” following a weekend of online attacks from nationalists.

The union came under attack after the National newspaper printed an article “revealing” the Unison’s lead local government negotiator Johanna Baxter was a long-time Labour Party activist, currently serving as chair of the party’s NEC, as well as holding a directorship of anti-separation group Scotland in Union.

The piece featured a quote from “an SNP source” who appeared to claim that Ms Baxter had gone ahead with a schools strike this week — while Unite and GMB did not — in order to “score political points” as a member of the “Starmerite wing” of the Labour Party.
