FIRST Minister Mark Drakeford said today that his government was seeking legal advice following the Supreme Court decision about the Scottish government’s powers to hold an independence referendum.
Drakeford was responding to Plaid Cymru party leader Adam Price on whether the Welsh government held the executive power to hold referenda, including on constitutional matters, using secondary legislation.
“As to whether or not the Welsh settlement offers us a different route to holding a referendum than the one tested by the Scottish government in the courts — we are studying that judgement.
“We are making sure that we get advice to where that judgement impinges on the responsibilities of the Welsh Parliament.
“I don’t know enough to be sure that I can answer his question in all its detail, but I have a suspicion that it will not be quite as straightforward as he might think,” Mr Drakeford said.
