Solidarity with Sudan
PETER MASON is moved by a Sudanese singer songwriter and the insight into what makes popular Sudanese music tick
POIGNANT: Mo Sarrar and Mo Makki [Peter Mason]

Mo Sarrar
St Ethelburga’s Centre for Peace and Reconciliation, London
★★★★

MO SARRAR essentially began his musical career in the notorious Jungle refugee camp near Calais in France, where he ended up after fleeing from conflict in Sudan.

Finding comfort and strength in traditional tunes from his homeland – as well as in the composition of his own songs that were relevant to his new-found condition – he eventually found his way to England, where he now exists as a musician and actor.

Playing this solo concert as part of St Ethelburga’s Listen to the World programme, Sarrar treated a mixed audience to a blend of traditional, modern and self-penned songs, accompanied by his compatriot Mo Makki on synthesiser.
