US B-52s deployed to intimidate North Korea in aerial drills
In this photo provided by South Korean Defense Ministry, a U.S. B-52 bomber, C-17, and U.S. Air Force F-22 fighter jets fly over the Korean Peninsula during a joint air drill in South Korea on Dec. 20, 2022.

US B-52 bombers engaged in aerial drills with South Korean fighters over the peninsula today in a show of strength aimed at intimidating North Korea.

The joint drills “show the strong resolve of the Korea-US alliance and its perfect readiness to respond to any provocation by North Korea swiftly and overwhelmingly,” South Korean air force operation commander Lieutenant-General Park Ha Sik said.

The manoeuvres follow joint US-Japan-South Korea submarine exercises off North Korea this week, joint naval operations between South Korea and a US aircraft carrier group last week and the biggest field exercises between the two countries in five years last month.
