MYKHAILO MUDRYK was confirmed as a Chelsea player in the 22nd minute today, and at half-time he proudly sauntered onto the pitch at Stamford Bridge, draped in the flag of his nation Ukraine, to take in rapturous Chelsea applause.

It had the aura of a Biblical arrival — and in recent weeks Chelsea have looked like they could really do with a miracle.

On the one hand, the red-carpet treatment felt an over-the-top welcome for a player who few of his new teammates will ever have seen play. But then, he doesn’t have to do much to usurp the levels Chelsea’s players are currently operating at.
