THE death of a teenager who was shot during a protest in the southern Peruvian region of Puno has brought the death toll to 49 from more than a month of unrest following the coup that toppled president Pedro Castillo.

Relatives of the teenager, who Peruvian officials only identified by the initials BAJ, said that he had been hospitalised in a critical condition for two days after being shot in the head.

His death on Thursday raised the number of fatalities during protests in the hard-hit Puno region alone to 19.
