Leftwingers condemn the coup against Castillo in Peru
Supporters of former President Pedro Castillo confront riot police surrounding the police station where Castillo arrived earlier, in Lima, Peru, Wednesday, December 7, 2022

LEFTWINGERS have condemned the coup against Peru’s democratically elected president, Pedro Castillo, by lawmakers of the country’s Congress on Wednesday.

Mr Castillo was stripped of his office by the right-wing lawmakers that dominate the legislative body, arrested and then charged with rebellion and allegedly violating constitutional order.

This came after a last-ditch attempt by Mr Castillo to stop the coup by dissolving Congress was blocked.
