Elise Hamersley sits down with former player VANESSA GRAY to talk about her experiences in the sport, as well as the future of women’s rugby

MORE than 1.7 million people across the UK tuned in as England battled New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup final last weekend. Among them were those with a different vested interest in the success of the Red Roses.

As Vanessa “Nessie” Gray watches the final from the renowned Cabbage Patch pub in Twickenham, she does so with a wealth of experience behind her eyes.

To the passer-by, the 51-year-old is simply another person holding a Guinness and enjoying the rugby. But Nessie knew better than most how England’s athletes would be feeling after their defeat.
