North Korea test fires long-range missile over Japan, forcing residents to take shelter
Primary school students find shelter near a building on their way to school soon after a report of North Korea's missile launch, in Misawa, Aomori prefecture, northern Japan Tuesday, October 4, 2022

NORTH KOREA test-fired a ballistic missile over Japan today, forcing residents to seek shelter in schools, Metro stations and basements.

It was the such alert in Japan since 2017, when North Korea fired an intermediate-range Hwasong-12 missile twice over the country in a span of weeks during a previous run of weapons tests.

The range was estimated at 4,600km (2,860 miles), making it the furthest ever travelled by a missile from North Korea, which usually sends the weapons high into space to avoid flying over other countries.
