FOR Graham Potter, the importance of his first Champions League match in the dugout couldn’t be overstated.

This wasn’t just his maiden voyage as Chelsea manager. This was his one and only game between his announcement as Thomas Tuchel’s replacement on September 8 and the beginning of October.

Last weekend’s league game off. This weekend’s league game off. An international break on the horizon. The result here against RB Salzburg mattered.

You could see it mattered to Potter, whose exit from the Brighton project for which he deserves so much credit leaves 34-year-old player Adam Lallana as the club’s caretaker manager.
