Scholz defends record on energy and says Germany will get through winter

GERMAN Chancellor Olaf Scholz vowed the country would get through winter today as opposition leader Friedrich Merz accused him of “damaging German companies irreparably.”

Mr Merz did not criticise sanctions on Russia, imposed following the invasion of Ukraine, which have seen gas supplies severely disrupted, but said the government should drop plans to phase out nuclear power.

Mr Scholz retorted that the country’s energy crisis was down to a lack of planning by previous administrations led by Mr Merz’s Christian Democrats, though the current Chancellor held high ministerial office in those.
