UNITE voted today to back proportional representation for Westminster elections, during the union’s policy conference in Liverpool.
This would mean seats in Parliament being allocated according to each party’s share of the vote.
The current system is first-past-the-post, which allows MPs to represent constituencies without the support of a majority of electors in them and tends to exaggerate parliamentary majorities way beyond actual vote share.
