'Mine is a story of triumph': Ellie Robinson holds head high after hip condition forces effective retirement aged 20
Icon of GB's Rio Paralympics hails 'one of the proudest moments of my life' having competed Tokyo despite physical deterioration during the pandemic-enforced delay to the games
British swimmer Ellie Robinson

BRITISH swimmer Ellie Robinson insisted today that she does not want to represent a “story of sorrow and heartbreak” after effectively calling time on her career due to an ongoing hip condition.

The 20-year-old failed to defend her Paralympic butterfly title, finishing fifth in the S6 50m event she won at the 2016 games.

Robinson, who became an icon for Paralympics GB when she competed in Rio aged just 15, was diagnosed with Perthes disease in her right hip in 2012 — a rare childhood condition which occurs when the blood supply to the head of the femur is temporarily disrupted.
