Thousands demonstrate outside Brazil's Supreme Court over indigenous lands case
Indigenous people march during the "Luta pela Vida," or Struggle for Life mobilisation, as they protest to pressure Supreme Court justices

THOUSANDS of indigenous Brazilians marched to the Supreme Court yesterday, calling on judges to confirm their right to their ancestral lands.

Six thousand demonstrators from 173 ethnic groups sang and danced on the route from behind the National Theatre, where they have been camping for a week, dressed in traditional outfits including feather head-dresses and with painted bodies.

Justices will be evaluating a lower court’s ruling that invalidated a claim by some indigenous people in Santa Catarina state to what they say is their ancestral territory.
