MPs are to investigate levels of abuse and violence against shopworkers
A sign in a branch of Tesco in Kensal Rise, north London, highlights the need for social distancing by shoppers

MPs are to investigate levels of abuse and violence against shopworkers after a petition calling for legislation to protect them passed the 100,000 mark.

Shopworkers’ union Usdaw wants violence against retail staff to be placed into a special category of criminal offence with stiffer penalties, similar to that of emergency service workers.

The union’s call comes against a background of increasing abuse and violence against shopworkers, and is backed by 23 retail chains and retail organisations.
