HONG KONG was plunged into violence again at the weekend as demonstrators ignored city authorities’ new ban on the wearing of face masks.
Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets in face masks in open defiance of the ban, though a bid to have it quashed by the High Court failed. The court said it would hear an application by opposition legislators against the ban later this month.
Rioters vandalised shop fronts and trade union offices and set Metro stations alight — as they have done during previous protests — while others hurled petrol bombs at police, who responded with tear gas and bean bag rounds.
