DONALD TRUMP is not welcome in Britain and will be met with protests, campaigners warned today, after the US president suggested he may embark on a state visit in September.
In February Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer handed Mr Trump an unprecedented invitation from the King for a second visit, his first hosted by the late queen during his first presidency in 2019.
Asked by journalists about the second meeting, Mr Trump said: “I was invited by the King and the country — great country.
“They’re going to do a second, as you know, a second fest… that’s what it is: a fest, and it’s beautiful, and it’s the first time it’s ever happened to one person.
“And the reason is we have two separate terms, and it’s an honour… I’m a friend of Charles, I have great respect for King Charles and the family, William, we have really just a great respect for the family.
“And I think they’re setting a date for September.”
Asked whether he thought it would be smaller event than last time, he said: “I don’t know how it can be bigger than the last one.
“The last one was, as you know, incredible. But they say it’s going to be even more important, so it’s a great honour to be so chosen.”
Buckingham Palace declined to comment.
The government is trying to salvage economic ties with the US following Mr Trump’s imposition of 10 per cent tariffs on all British imports.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves said “active negotiations” are still ongoing.
“Donald Trump is not welcome in Britain,” Stop Trump Coalition said in a statement. “We will build the broadest possible alliance for a truly massive demonstration against his visit.”
“Donald Trump’s racism should disqualify him from a state visit,” said Stand Up to Racism co-convener Sabby Dhalu. “Trump used dehumanising and violent language during his election campaign, describing migrants as ‘animals that will cut your throat’ while telling nearly all white audiences that they had ‘good genes’.”
“We reject racism. We reject a Trump state visit.”
