China: Abe snubs WWII parade

JAPANESE Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will not attend a military parade in China next week to commemorate the end of World War II, the government said yesterday.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga claimed that the decision was made because of Mr Abe’s parliamentary schedule.

But he added that Mr Abe told recently parliament that he hoped the theme of the event “would not be anti-Japanese.”

Presidents Vladimir Putin of Russia, Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj of Mongolia, Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi of Egypt and Milos Zeman of the Czech Republic will attend.
