500 staff face axe as Tesco shuts distribution centres

SUPERMARKET giant Tesco is to shut two distribution centres, destroying 500 jobs. Shopworkers’ and distribution union Usdaw said yesterday the news had “devastated” workers.

The closure of the two centres — at Welham Green in Hertfordshire and Chesterfield in Derbyshire — will cost 1,000 jobs, but Usdaw said that 500 workers would be redeployed. Tesco said it was part of a shake-up of its distribution network.

Usdaw national officer Joanne McGuinness said “Usdaw will now enter into consultation talks with the company where we will look closely at the business case for these proposed closures.
