MORE than 800 shop workers are to lose their jobs after the closures of 34 Budgens stores was announced yesterday.
Budgens parent company The Food Retailer said it had been unable to find a buyer for the stores after the 34 branches went into administration last year. The Budgens chain, which has stores around Britain, was sold to Food Retailer by the Co-op last year.
Shopworkers’ union Usdaw national officer John Gorles branded the news “devastating,” saying he was urgently trying to meet the Co-op to help find staff alternative employment.
