BEXHILL-ON-SEA EXHIBITION
Willem Sandberg: From Type to Image
De la Warr Pavilion
Marina
April 30-September 4
This free exhibition tells the story of how Dutch designer Willem Sandberg created a unique graphic language, including his use of “warm printing,” experimental typography and the incorporation of simple materials and reuse of existing print matter in his work. Sandberg’s distinctive designs are characterised by asymmetric typography created from fonts, ciphers and the rough contours of shapes torn out of paper and the exhibition showcases the entire body of such work from the 1930s to the 1980s.

BRISTOL THEATRE
Long Day’s Journey into Night
Bristol Old Vic Theatre
King Street
Until April 23
This no-holds barred autobiographical account of US playwright Eugene O’Neill’s life captures one fateful summer’s day in the life of the Tyrones. Haunted by the past but unable to face the truth of the present, James and Mary Tyrone and their two sons test the bonds of a family caught in a cycle of love and resentment. As day turns to night and each member of the family indulges in their vices, the truth unravels, leaving behind a quartet of ruined lives. Powerful stuff. The production, directed by Richard Eyre and with Jeremy Irons and Lesley Manville in the lead roles, is part of Bristol Old Vic’s 250th anniversary season.

LONDON EXHIBITION
Look, Just Look, the Vistula is Near:
Russian Prints from WWI
London Print Studio
Harrow Road, W10
April 8 -May 7
This free exhibition features Russian prints made during the first world war and its aftermath. Taking its title from an early propaganda print produced by suprematist painter Kazimir Malevich and revolutionary poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, the show presents work produced as part of a propaganda effort from the tsarist war mobilisation in 1914 through to the Bolshevik era and the civil war. One of the most dramatic eras in modern history, the period was also one of relentless artistic experiment, in which revolutionary images were generated that continue to influence the contemporary world.
