Dance: Sensational swim in cross-cultural currents

An Italian in Madrid
Sadler’s Wells, London EC1
5/5

THIS world premiere of Richard Alston’s An Italian In Madrid, part of a quadruple bill, is a sublime hybrid of European classical and kathak dance from northern India.

Set to sonatas by the Italian composer Domenico Scarlatti, who was himself influenced by the “foreign” style of flamenco while resident in Andalucia, the unfolding narrative is a departure from Alston’s canon of abstract-expressive works.
