Haiti: UN soldiers demanded sex for food and drugs
UN PEACEKEEPERS in Haiti pressed more than 225 women into having sex in exchange for food and medication, a report due later this month will reveal.
The draft by the Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) looked at the way UN peacekeeping, which has about 125,000 people in some of the world’s most troubled areas, deals with the persistent problem of sexual abuse and exploitation.
It found that about a third of alleged sexual abuse involved under-18s, that assistance to victims was “severely deficient” and that the average investigation by OIOS, which said it prioritised cases involving minors or rape, took over a year to complete.
