Schools blow £1.3bn a year on use of supply teachers

MASS resignations from the teaching profession have led to schools spending £1.3 billion a year on supply staff, unions said yesterday.

The overall spend on agency teachers soared by 27 per cent between 2011-12 and 2013-14, according to new figures unearthed by the Labour Party.

The average school now spends an astonishing £59,000 a year on supply staff.
