MANCHESTER UNITED’S final home game of the season against Bournemouth was abandoned yesterday after the discovery of a suspect package inside Old Trafford. Bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion on the “suspicious device,” Greater Manchester Police said. Both the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand and the famous Stretford End of the ground were evacuated as supporters made their way into the ground ahead of the 3pm kick-off. But at 2.40pm, as players were warming up, an “operation red” alert was heard over the Tannoy system. The players then made their way into the changing rooms and it is believed they were asked to remain inside after unconfirmed reports suggesting a suspect package had been found in the north-west corner of the ground. And at around 3.15pm the match was abandoned after discussions between United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and Premier League chairman Richard Scudamore. The Premier League said it would rearrange the game for “as soon as practically possible.”
