SARAH KILPATRICK has been overwhelmingly elected deputy general secretary of the National Education Union, winning 88 per cent of the vote to Kacey de Groot’s 12 per cent.

Ms Kilpatrick has been an art teacher since 2006 and a workplace rep for 10 years, has served on the union’s national executive since 2021 and is current national president of the union.

“The election was won on a platform of unity, equality and a firm commitment to the NEU’s principles of social justice and education reform,” she told the Morning Star. “I look forward to working alongside our elected general secretary Daniel Kebede and our national executive in leading the union.”

Mr Kebede said: “Sarah and I were young teachers together in the north-east and have known each other for over a decade.[She] has long demonstrated she is passionate about campaigning for the world-class education system our children deserve.”
