MEN’S BASKETBALL: The New York Knicks take a 2-0 lead over San Antonio Spurs into tomorrow morning’s third leg of the best-of-seven NBA Finals on their Madison Square Garden court. Karl-Anthony Towns top-scored with 21 points and had 13 rebounds as the Knicks gained a narrow 105-104 victory at San Antonio in game two and extended their winning run to 12 matches. The Knicks have not been NBA champions since 1973.
WOMEN’S CYCLING: Dutch rider Demi Vollering overturned a 49-second deficit on Sunday’s last stage around the hill town of Saluzzo to win the Giro d’Italia and became the first woman to claim all three Grand Tours. Germany’s Antonia Niedermaier finished 34 seconds behind in second place with overnight leader Anna van der Breggen slipping into third. Vollering also picked up the Queen of the Mountains classification.
MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Brandon Webster-Mansfield ran in five tries as the London Broncos extended their 100 per cent record to 14 Championship games with a 134-0 demolition of bottom club North Wales Crusaders. They top the table by six points from Newcastle Thunder, who thumped Hunslet 52-6, and Barrow, 56-12 winners at Workington. Oldham are two points further back in fourth but have two games in hand.
MEN’S FOOTBALL: Italy needed penalties to beat Belgium in Sunday’s European Under-17s final after the teams had finished level at 1-1 in normal time. Belgium had taken the lead in the 85th minute through substitute Noa Cobiella before Atalanta’s Marcello Fugazzola equalised for the Italians with a stoppage-time penalty. Italy have won the annual tournament twice and also finished as runners-up in the last three years.
