ETHIOPIA: At least 31 people were killed and dozens injured when an overcrowded bus travelling from Dessie to Addis Ababa plunged into a ravine in the northern Amhara region.
Police said delays in emergency response, caused by a lack of infrastructure and ambulance services, may have contributed to the death toll.
The authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, which happened on a notoriously dangerous mountain road.
SUDAN: More than 1,000 civilians were killed in drone strikes during the first five months of this year, according to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk, who warned of a sharp escalation in Sudan’s civil war.
The conflict has increasingly been marked by drone attacks on civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, markets and displacement camps.
The war, now in its fourth year, has created the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.
CAMBODIA: Opposition politician Rong Chhun has urged the Supreme Court to overturn his incitement conviction, saying he hopes to return to politics and promote national unity.
The 56-year-old was sentenced last year to four years in prison and barred from voting or standing for office after meeting villagers displaced by government projects.
A verdict on his appeal is expected on June 19.
PAKISTAN: Two military pilots were killed when their jet crashed during a routine training mission near the north-western city of Mardan.
The military said a board of inquiry had been ordered to investigate the cause of the crash, while political and military leaders offered condolences to the families.
The accident came less than a week after a military helicopter crash killed 22 soldiers in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
