VATICAN: Pope Leo exalted the first US saint, Mother Frances Cabrini, today as a model for Christians to care for migrants in need, as he visited her birthplace in northern Italy.
Leo, who has clashed with the Trump administration over its brutal migrant crackdown, urged young people to learn about Ms Cabrini’s life and service, once again confirming history’s first US pope as the heir to Pope Francis in prioritising the plight of migrants.
SPAIN: A judge ordered Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s wife, Begona Gomez, to face trial on charges of influence peddling and corruption, and to surrender her passport.
Investigative judge Juan Carlos Peinado issued the ruling, arguing that Ms Gomez represented a flight risk. In addition to surrendering her passport, she must also appear before a court every two weeks. She denies any wrongdoing.
The decision has prompted calls from the opposition for Mr Sanchez to resign.
CRIMEA: Officials in the Russia-occupied peninsula suspended civilian petrol sales today as Ukraine ramped up attacks on fuel supplies.
Governor Sergey Aksyonov said that overnight Ukrainian strikes killed four people and wounded 28 others.
“Fuel will be sold only to government agencies that ensure the functioning and security of the Republic of Crimea,” Mr Aksyonov said. “I ask everyone to remain calm and to only trust official sources of information.”
ITALY: US President Donald Trump lashed out at Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Saturday, insisting again that she asked “over and over” for a photo with him at the G7 meeting last week.
“She is doing poorly in Italy … possibly because she turned down the [US]… when it came to denying Iran from obtaining or developing a Nuclear Weapon (But so did Nato, for that matter!),” Mr Trump said on social media.
Ms Meloni soon responded, telling Mr Trump that “these constant, unprovoked attacks are senseless.”
