Israeli strike kills World Cup screening organiser in Gaza just before kick-off
Palestinians carry the body of Mohamed al-Wahidi, director of public relations for the Egyptian Committee in Gaza, who was killed in an Israeli military strike, during his funeral at the Great Omari Mosque in Gaza City, Wednesday, July 8, 2026

AN ISRAELI attack on Gaza just before the kick-off of the Egypt-Argentina World Cup match killed a top Palestinian aid official who helped organise public screenings of the game across the enclave, according to local health officials.

The blast underlined how Israel is continuing to kill civilians in strikes across Gaza on an almost daily basis, despite the truce declared in October.

The bomb hit a car in the Sabra district of Gaza City at dusk on Tuesday, killing passers-by Mohamed al-Wahidi, an official of the Egyptian Committee in Gaza, 10-year-old Hamza al-Deri, his eight-year-old brother Fari and the driver of the car Ahmed Daghmush, 33, said Dr Mohamed Abu Selmiya, the director of Shifa Hospital, which received the four bodies.

Israel’s military said Mr Wahidi was not a target of the strike.

An Israeli strike had hit the same street half an hour earlier, causing no casualties.

The committee for which Mr Wahidi worked is the relief arm of the Egyptian government, which provides food, shelters and other assistance to Palestinians in Gaza.
