INDIA: At least 10 people were killed and 17 others remain missing after a suspected gas explosion triggered a collapse inside an under-construction tunnel at a hydropower project in India’s north-eastern Himalayan state of Sikkim, officials said today.

The blast ripped through the tunnel on Monday at Samardung village, about 25 miles from the state capital, Gangtok, where multiple workers were carrying out construction work.


GERMANY: The suspect in a shooting last month that left six people dead was found dead in his prison cell today, authorities said.

The shooting in Stade, in northern Germany, occurred on June 29 at a facility that provides temporary accommodation for pregnant women or young mothers with children. 

The man, whom authorities have not named, was found in his cell at a prison in Bremervoerde, near Stade. The investigation so far indicates that the suspect killed himself, the ministry said. 


AFGHANISTAN: Rescue crews searched today for survivors and bodies among the rubble of houses destroyed by devastating flash floods that have reportedly killed nearly two dozen people and left more than 100 people missing.

The Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority said 23 people had died and more than 100 were missing after floods struck the eastern province of Nuristan on Monday.


TURKEY: The deposed leader of the main opposition today announced plans to establish a new political party to challenge President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The announcement came months after Ozgur Ozel was removed from his post as leader of the Republican People’s Party by a court order. Critics allege the move was politically motivated.
