CAMPAIGNERS against the US’s Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability (Darc) being built in Pembrokeshire are holding a mass demonstration in Haverfordwest on Tuesday.

The Parc (Pembrokeshire Against Radar Campaign) campaigners are organising the protest to remind the Welsh government that the people of Wales want the building of the deep space radar scrapped.

The Welsh government decided last week that it would decide on the Ministry of Defence’s planning application to build the Darc in Pembrokeshire.

Parc organisers said that the demonstration will also be a chance to celebrate the Welsh government’s decision, which followed years of campaigning work.

Pembrokeshire County Council’s planning committee was due to take the decision on Tuesday but planning minister Sian Gwenllian stepped in after deciding there were wider issues to be considered.

The minister said that the proposal for a 27-dish radar array overlooking the St Davids Peninsula of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park could result in it becoming a military target.

Ms Gwenllian also said that in her decision that the proposed radar base could impact on an “irreplaceable habitat.”

The National Park Authority has objected to the scheme because of its unacceptable adverse visual impact, the damage it would cause to tourism and the harm it would do to a nationally important landscape.

Welsh government environmental agency Natural Resources Wales also objected to Darc.

A Parc spokesperson said: “As we made [clear] in our case to Welsh ministers, the Darc proposal is part of a weapons system designed to track and target satellites belonging to other countries around the world.

“That is why Darc has been described as a significant escalation in the militarisation of space.”
