SOUTH KOREA: Former president Yoon Suk Yeol was convicted today of making false statements during his election campaign, in the latest verdict after he was removed from office last year over his brief imposition of martial law.

The Seoul Central District Court sentenced Mr Yoon to 18 months in prison, suspended for three years, saying his false statements during the campaign may have affected voters’ “fair judgement” of the candidates.

PAKISTAN: The death toll from monsoon rains and flash floods over the past month surpassed 100 today as weather forecasters warned that more heavy rain is expected later this week.

The National Disaster Management Authority said 109 people had died nationwide since June 26, nearly half in the north-western Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

UNITED STATES: Police arrested one suspect and were looking for another after gunfire erupted at a crowded food festival beneath Seattle’s Space Needle on Sunday, leaving three people dead and four injured, including a toddler.

Investigators believe the two suspects were shooting at each other and, although one remained on the loose, Assistant Seattle Police Chief Tyrone Davis told a news conference on Sunday night that there was no ongoing threat to the public.
