CONGO: Confirmed cases in the ongoing Ebola outbreak have reached 3,262, its Ministry of Health said today, nearly matching the 2018-2020 outbreak that was the country’s largest ever recorded.

The outbreak, declared on May 15, is the fastest on record and concentrated in eastern Ituri province, with 1,437 deaths reported.

Unlike most previous outbreaks, the Bundibugyo virus responsible has no approved vaccines or treatments, while insurgent violence and health worker strikes have complicated response efforts.

LIBYA: Protesters demonstrating against ongoing power outages stormed a key energy complex today and closed gas lines that fuel power plants, which officials warned could trigger a nationwide blackout.

The disruption at the Mellitah Oil & Gas complex, about 55 miles west of Tripoli, caused severe shortages in gas supplies and pushed generators out of service.

The Government of Unity said the defence ministry later secured the facility, allowing gas supplies to resume and gradually restoring electricity to the national grid.

MIGRANTS: Authorities have extended the lease on a controversial migrant detention centre in Texas despite calls for its closure following accusations of human rights abuses, with Ice keeping Camp East Montana open for at least another year for $776 million (£583.35m).

The facility, which opened in August 2025 and holds about 1,600 detainees, has faced reports of severe assaults by guards, medical neglect and overcrowding from Human Rights Watch and the ACLU.

Ice insists detainees are not being abused and have access to food, medical care and legal counsel.

UN: US diplomats walked out as their French counterparts were speaking at the United Nations on Monday after France criticised the Trump administration’s human rights record following US opposition to giving UN rights chief Volker Turk a second term.

The reappointment on Friday received overwhelming support, with the US among the 10 “No” votes and France tweeting that America was “no longer a beacon of human rights.”

The walkout follows wider tensions between the US and Europe over Donald Trump’s commitment to Nato, troop deployments and his desire to control Greenland.
