LUXURY car manufacturer Jaguar has been fined almost £1 million after a worker was crushed at plant in Birmingham.

Jaguar Land Rover was slapped with a £900,000 penalty as well as costs of £49,864 by Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday as it was found to be in serious breach of health and safety regulations.

Unite member Mark Widnall lost a leg in the incident in the Solihull vehicle plant in 2015. He is seeking compensation for his trauma.

He had been carrying out vehicle checks on the PVQ line when a worker accidentally hit the accelerator causing two vehicles to collide and crush his leg.

Mr Widnall said: “This is the first stage in drawing a line under my accident but I have been left with a prosthetic limb which means I can’t do things I used to do, like going out dancing.

“I had to move in with my elderly mother for a while, who also has to care for my brother.

“It is stressful having to rely on others.”

Unite assistant general secretary for legal services Howard Beckett said: “This is a shocking case.

“We will be supporting our member through his compensation claim, but the fact remains that he has lost a limb due to the negligence of the company and no money will change that.

“We will fight to get him the maximum compensation to help him rehabilitate and return to as independent a life as possible.”

The court heard that Jaguar Land Rover had two previous convictions for breaching health and safety regulations.
