Racing Racers up to plenty of Shenanigans at Kempton today, especially Mazzini

A REALLY good mix of competitive flat racing on the sand and national hunt racing this afternoon and the feature event at Kempton Park, the feature Snowdrop Fillies’ Stakes at 3.15 could go the way of SHENANIGANS trained by Roger Varian.

The selection only had a very light campaign last year, making a belated three-year-old debut in class three mile handicap at Newmarket in September, readily beating four rivals, before improving on that run when second to the smart Peach Melba off a 4lbs higher mark a fortnight later.

The daughter of Arcano obviously goes well when fresh and gets the nod over the six-year-old Smart Call and one of the relative outsiders Paco’s Angel.

Later on, the Queen’s Prize, a handicap over two miles, looks a really good renewal this year with CURBYOURENTHUSIASM set to defy top-weight after a cracking run in the all-weather championships at Lingfield Park last time out.

On that occasion the veteran grey wasn’t best served by a moderate pace, but was an eye-catching sixth of nine, beaten less than a length by the French raider Funny Kid.

Of the other entries, I have plenty of respect for the well handicapped bottom-weight Gavlar and the eight-year-old Sunblazer.

As far as the rest of the card is concerned, I certainly wouldn’t put you off the claims of MAZZINI (nap) in the Jack Berry House Handicap due off at 2.40, while KINKS may well continue the good start to the news flat season for Mick Channon in the opening two-year-old event at 1.30.

There are some big prizes up for offer at Kelso this afternoon including the Liz Adam Memorial Handicap Chase over an extended three-and-a-quarter-miles at 3.00.

Eider hero Baywing has deservedly gone up 9lbs in the handicap following that impressive success and a similar round of jumping will once again see him go close on ground he adores, but stable mate TAKINGRISKS and light-weight Newtown Lad could have his number getting plenty of weight down the foot of the handicap.

There are a couple of bets I will be having a closer look at on the evening all-weather card at Wolverhampton with MADRINHO (nb) top of the shop in the opener at 5.45.

Tony Carroll’s charge has steadily come down the handicap in the past 24 months after being rated as high as 89 this time last year and now set to run off a mark of just 67 less Poppy Bridgwater’s 3lbs claim.

If there is any kind of real pace in the race expect the top-weight to land his first victory since July 2015 at the main expense of Thorntoun Lady.

BALTIC PRINCE should go close to defying top-weight in the 7.15 under that good claimer Rossa Ryan, while PRANCING OSCAR can wrap up the card nicely for us in the extended mile handicap due off at 8.45.

Over the sticks at Kelso there are a couple I fancy in the form of TAKINGRISKS in the staying handicap hurdle at 3.35 and GASSIN GOLF in the 2.25.

The latter showed a bit more two outing back and if you can forgive and forget his run last time out he is absolutely thrown in here with conditions massively in his favour and could be worth an each-way play at a big price.
